Training and Background

I graduated from Harvard College with a B.A. in psychology. My M.D. is from Baylor Medical School in Houston, TX. I had a one year internship at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, followed by a four year residency in adult and child psychiatry at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor. My analytic training was with Seattle Psychoanalytic Institute.

I was an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Washington for six years. During that time I directed the day hospital for psychotic and autistic children. I have been a consultant to the Peace Corps, Seattle Public Schools, Psychiatry Division of Madigan General Hospital, Washington State Dept. of Corrections, community mental health clinics, and currently conduct a monthly seminar at Western State Hospital. For eight years I gave seminars for non-medical psychotherapists. I have maintained a private practice since 1969.

My regular fee is $200 per session of 45-50 minutes. I am covered by the major insurance carriers and some others; a call to the carrier or a website check will determine if I am a provider. Some HMOs require prior approval, so that needs to be determined. When the fee is a financial hardship it can be negotiated.

Balance, an original painting by Deborah Walker

Nothing’s farther from the truth
than truth: a cardinal, perched
upon an aqua, hieroglyphic jar,
intently looking where we’ve never seen
so far. It sees the dying growing old,
the moon seduced by dangling vines,
slay heaps where wonder went before.
Each tells us what must be and was,
evades right now. Cardinal, illiterate
of glyphs, always knows just how.
