The Perch

Two Audubon-like birds,
because they are extinct
and on the postcard in front of me,
dead to be observed,
perch on the end of a reddish
patterned, perhaps paper mache coil,
nine hands protruding to no obvious
purpose. Audubon’s gift fit the needs
of a raw, soon-to-become denatured country,
like the key in a well-oiled lock.
The birds, from beak to anus, think little
of the seeds they consume. Coils and hands
have meaning sufficiently obscure;
one hopes excitement finds their tomb.
